Schools :- How we work in partnership with our Schools

 The latest research findings based on 750 schools suggest that pupils in 86% of schools have access to a counsellors. The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) also estimate that between 64% and 80% of secondary schools in England offer some kind of counselling, and the numbers have increased over the last ten years.  The evidence shows that counselling in schools is increasingly viewed as a profession, with counsellors recognised on Accredited Voluntary Registers.

Time 4 You is working inside schools and other settings to improve the emotional well-being of children, young people and their families.  Our team consists of professionally qualified, trained and clinically supervised counsellors supporting our client base of schools and academy’s, secondary and primary across Redcar and Cleveland, and as far as Scarborough. We work together to really understand young people we involve parents whenever possible and encourage this if it helps a young person to sort out a problem.  We can often put into words what young people find difficult to say.

We use relaxed and informal settings and a variety of different media to help children and young people communicate their problems in a way that is natrual to them. 



We create hope and build resilience through compassion and empathy and by creating a safe space for children and young people to open up and share their issues with highly qualified, experienced professionals.

We offer a range of therapeuticinterventions, including:

  • Family Group Conference (FGC)
    • A Family Group Conference model is traditionally used to support families and the children pre-breakdown; however, as the evidence base is increasing we also work with families from an early intervention approach supporting all children where there are  issues or concerns.. We believe that FGC’s are a powerful and effective way to give families the opportunity to get together and make positive and achievable plans for their own welfare and future well-being
  • Individual Psychological Therapy - Child
  •  Counselling and therapeutic Play

Qualified counsellors and play therapists will deliver both long and short term one to one counselling through a range of therapeutic interventions to help young people manage an extensive range of emotional issues including:

  • Bereavement
  • Domestic violence
  • Family breakdown
  • Neglect
  • Trauma
  • Peer relationships/friendships
  • Self-harm
  • Stress and anxiety

Our early intervention approach helps develop confidence, self-esteem and resilience. School counselling has been evidenced to help children and young people achieve their potential in and out of school and enjoy their childhood. Professional counsellors and play therapists work towards Goals with young people in order to

  • Help deal with painful emotions
  • Enable a young person to achieve some level of congruence regards to thoughts, feelings and understand behaviour
  • Enable a young person to change behaviours which have negative consequences
  • Enable a young person to function comfortably and adaptively within their external environment.
  • To maximise the opportunity for young people to pursue developmental milestones.

Parental involvement is encouraged and essential for working with primary aged children. An essential element in this profession is recognising when a referral needs stepped up intervention to Tier 3 CAMHS service. We have established a direct referral route to this service.

The majority of our counsellors/psychotherapists and Play therapists are also Licensed to deliver this programme.

Fun Friends is for children aged 4 - 7 years of age, it consists of 8-10 weekly sessions with parental involvement during all sessions. The aim of this programmes is to build resilience through social and emotional skills development to empower children, families and teachers. Promote peer learning through play and experiential/inquiry learning and encourage support networks and positive role models.

Friends for Life is for children and young people aged 8 to 12 years of age, it consists of 8-10 weekly sessions. The Friends for Life program has been developed by Paula Barrett for children aged between 8 and 11 to assist them in coping with anxiety, fear, and sadness. Friends for Life has been developed to be administered alongside educational and curriculum guidelines, and as such is complementary to school-based learning.

Friends Youth is for young people ages 13 to 17 years of age, it consists of 8-10 weekly session. To build social and emotional resilience in adolescents aged between 12-15 years. Adolescence poses new challenges and provides completely new experiences for young people, and young people can find themselves faced with elevated expectations and increased responsibilities, higher academic workloads, increased peer pressure and more difficulties with friends.


When  asked, “what difference if any have you noticed about young people who have attended counselling?” A leading headteacher replied  “more confident, less angry, more positive towards school and self, and more co-operative!”

Our Ethos

Time 4 You Psychological Services provide a confidential service, (within the limits of child protection) to young people with emotional, social and or behavioural problems.  We do this by being IN SCHOOL, where children and young people can have easy access to counselling support, and where we can work with teaching staff to create a better environment to support young people emotionally and psychologically. We believe young people  whatever their age, should have the opportunity to express their feelings and concerns in a non-judgemental way.
